In the pursuit of a direct and pure materiality of paint and color the Plastic Fantastic paintings capture paint in its most liquid form, losing none of its pigment to a porous ground, such as canvas. Utilizing sheets of clear plastic and the transparent properties of acrylic paint, these plastic paintings of fantastic landscapes and abstract spaces stretch the limits of mark making and the plasticity of the medium of paint. In process, these paintings are additive and subtractive, constantly observed from both sides as liquid plastic meanders, errodes and finally takes hold. Opacity is built up slowly until the paint itself is thick enough to maintain its own form, then is extracted from its plastic ground completely and glued face down to a wooden board to display the intricate web of sediment collected on its bottom. This, the final image to be hung on the wall, captures paint in its entirety and purest form, just as it was originally laid down, like frozen liquid, with zero material absorption.
